I recommend this book for beginners and young children who have just mastered the moves of the pieces. This book condenses much of what's required in the field of tactics. Tactics often decide the game in games played by children under the age of 12. It's not important to worry about chess imbalances as yet - one should learn to play tactically and develop their skills in this area before venturing elsewhere.

  1. Hi John,
Thanks for the recommendation. Based on reviews, it seems more for kids closer to 12 who have good reading skills for their age.

Please consider using 'tags' for your posts so that readers who are interested in a particular topic can search easily (eg: chess for children).

By the way, what first move to teach young children? d4 or e4?

  2. Hi Erwin,

    Thanks for your comments.

I believe in the Singapore context, our children do have good reading skills even at the age of 8-10. So this book should suit them.

I shall add tags to my posts when I find the time.

It is clear that 1 e4 is the move of choice for tactics to be introduced for young children.
